Although it is sure that some kind of Roman settlement established in La Secuita, the history of the town as we know it today started in the second half of the 12th century, after el Camp de Tarragona was conquered by the Counts of Barcelona. The creation of human settlements was started thanks to the efforts of a nobleman called Guillem de Claramunt, that together with some other nobles undertook the repopulation of the region of El Codony (region located on both sides of the Francolí river). El Codony was an ecclesiastic dependency of the church of Sant Pere del Codony. All the villages in the current municipality of La Secuita got under the civil and ecclesiastic authority of the archbishop and the Monastery of Santes Creus. This special situation of jurisdictional duality lasted until the beginning of the 19th century.

Only l'Argilaga had a different historical evolution from the other villages in the municipality.

The municipality of La Secuita in its current configuration was administratively instituted at the beginning of the 19th century (after the end of the lordships), it included La Secuita, Vistabella, Els Masos, Tapioles and El Pontarró. In 1842 Les Gunyoles became part of the municipality and so did L'Argilaga-Montbuí in 1846.

Local festivities

The Town Festival in La Secuita falls on August the 15th (l'Assumpció's day). The winter Town Festival used to be celebrated on January the first. Also the festivities of Sant Sebastià (January ,20th) and Sant Cristòfol (July, 10th) have been recovered in the last few years.

The Town Festival in L'Argilaga falls on August the 16th on Sant Roc's Day and also on January the 25th day of la Conversió de Sant Pau.

Vistabella celebrates its Summer Town Festival on Sant Bartomeu's Day (August, 24th) and a few years ago the town still celebrated The Three Wise Men Day (January, 6th).

Finally the Town Festival in Les Gunyoles falls on Sant Jaume's Day (August, 24th). Apart from the town festivals, in the last years, many new leisure and social activities have been started, together with the foundation of social and cultural associations that have revitalised the social life in the villages that shape the municipality.

Remarkable buildings

The urban centre of La Secuita has three different parts: the old town, the suburban area from the 18th century and finally the latest urban development. The medieval parish church of Santa Maria has suffered many alterations throughout the years. It is formed by three naves from different periods, the central one, in Gothic style, was the first one to be built.

Other important buildings are the Casa Mallafré (with an ashlar portal and Gothic windows), the manor house of la Tallada (with a series of ogival arches).

In the aggregate village of l'Argilaga the church of Sant Roc and la Casa dels Frares that belonged to the Servites from Vila-rodona.

In Vistabella we come across the parish a beautiful work of art, the parish church built by architect Josep Maria Jujol.
